The growing red dots on the Automobile Industry’s monitor were a matter of concern for the Heavy Industries Minister Praful Patel, who was trying out all measures to revive the industry. One of those was bringing the Indian government and the Automobile Sector together, for the revival of the latter. At the Auto Expo 2014, New Delhi, Patel called for a greater cooperation between the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) and Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). He further said, “There has been a temporary roadblock in terms of automobile growth in the last few years and the industry which was growing for the last seven to eight years saw reversal of trend. It is important that the government realizes that this needs to be corrected… take the right measures and give incentives and energy stimulus.” Patel also emphasized on the importance of streamlining the sector, to stir things up. This was the chain of events for the Automobile Industry, prior to the announcement of the interim budget.

The winds of change for the automobile Industry have finally arrived. P. Chidambaram, while announcing the budget for this year, also said that the two wheelers and the SUVs will now undergo a major deduction in their excise duty. Praful Patel’s contributions towards the industry have been commendable. Even when the Automobile Sector was going through a lull, Patel reposed his faith in its working procedures. At one of his recent interviews, Patel also mentioned that India’s automobile industry is indeed at par, with the leading car manufacturers of the world. To add to the tally, it has been developing new technology indigenously. Thus, the need of the hour is to focus more on its clarity and its approach towards the market. There is certainly no doubting India’s talent, when it comes to the automobile sector. In fact, India happens to be the 6th largest manufacturer of cars, commercial vehicles and two –wheelers in the world. Keeping in mind the pool of resources, the big names of the Automobile sector have set up their base in India.

To mitigate India’s dependence on other foreign countries for fuel, Patel also implemented the NEMMP plan in January 2013. The aim was also to manufacture electric vehicles and export the same, to the other foreign countries. It also aimed at creating a green corridor, thereby getting rid of issues related to environmental clearances, which tend to delay the execution of the mega projects. Now that the industry is back on track, NCP Leader Praful Patel will look to take things forward from here on, with his trailblazing ideas and his ‘never say die’ character.
